Environmental & Rural Solutions (ERS) offers environmental and tourism planning services in the northern part of the Eastern Cape, Southern KZN and Lesotho. The partners have been involved in development in the area for over eighteen years. ERS is a small but dynamic organization, owned and managed by two women, providing hands-on planning and implementation of projects for a range of clients, including engineers, local authorities, NGOs, village-based groups, private concerns, academic institutions and Government.The focus of the support is on providing customized guidance that respects local, natural and cultural environments while providing a professional service and realistic recommendations.
ERS has worked extensively with local government and communities in integrated development planning and in preparation of sector specific environmental and tourism plans derived from regional and spatial plans.
A network of experience and professional consultants and associates provides a framework for ”drawing” in appropriate expertise where required for specific interventions. These associates include ecologists, GIS experts, academics, wetland specialists, social facilitation practitioners, legal advisors, heritage consultants, tourism experts, engineers, village level facilitators, surveyors, etc.
ERS is VAT registered, and certified as a level 4 BEE compliant supplier. The company has basic GIS capacity, 4WD vehicles, excellent local knowledge and language, and a clear grasp of the environmental legislation, placing it soundly as an efficient and effective sustainable development roleplayer in the sub-region. ERS is the co-secretariat for the local Umzimvubu Catchment Partnership Programme which has an MoU between 32 members.
The team also works closely with environmental and conservation role-players to enhance the protection of ecosystem integrity and services in the sub-region, to augment rural livelihoods in a sustainable manner.

- Sustainable natural resource utilisation and management planning (holistic conservation through production)
- Environmental Management Planning (EMPs) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA)
- Rural tourism product development and planning
- Alien plant management and grassland restoration implementation
To contribute to sustainable development in the border area of Eastern Cape, Lesotho and KZN, through facilitating effective participation by stakeholders and promoting conservation of natural resources and biodiversity, heritage and culture. This includes undertaking environmental impact assessments and development of practical environmental management plans, plus promotion of responsible tourism as an effective rural development and land use strategy.
