ERS is 100% women owned (50% PDI), with four permanent female staff (66% PDI) and two male staff. The company subcontracts where necessary for extra capacity. We have a network of proven partners and associates based in Universities, research institutions, NGOs and the private sector, as well as individuals whom we draw upon as needed to provide top class service and support. The four permanent staff comprise two professional environmental planners, an environmental officer & facilitator, and one administrator with community facilitation and environmental education skills.

Lipalesa Sissie Matela (director) has a BSc in Environmental Science and MSc. in Agronomy and Soil Science, with over 20 years of hands-on experience and research in environmental management, rural development and technical planning. She received additional training in soil and environmental management in the United States of America, Finland, Canada, South Africa and Lesotho. She also received organizational and personnel management training in Canada, Kenya, South Africa and the Netherlands. Sissie received training in ecotourism development from Zimbabwe and Mozambique and was instrumental in initiating a national park, a nature reserve and a cultural centre while working for the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority.
She was involved at different times over the last 18 years with the Maluti Drakensberg Transfrontier Development Project, and was the environmental specialist for the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority. Sissie also worked for the CSIR’s Environmentek as Researcher, managed a Canadian funded integrated rural development programme in Lesotho as well as running an environmental NGO in South Africa. She has worked as a field soil scientist, development facilitator, and university lecturer, and published several information and promotion materials, produced educational manuals and posters, published articles in journals, and produced project reports. Sissie carried out an analysis of the need for a regional approach to Environmental Impact Assessment in Southern Africa commissioned by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In addition, she has completed assignments on management of environmental resources for international organizations such as the World Bank, the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). Sissie has a strong knowledge of the South African policy and legislation pertaining to environmental management.
Sissie has been the Environmental Specialist on the team that successfully completed Spatial Development Frameworks for 4 Local Municipalities in the Eastern Cape, where she was responsible for environmental assessments, ecotourism development and assessments of agricultural potential. Nicky McLeod (manager)has been working in the field of environmental resource management in rural areas since 1992. She has a B.Sc. in Environmental & Geographical Science and Archaeology, with Honours in Environmental Science, a diploma in environmental education and permaculture, as well as qualifications in development design, management and facilitation. She has 14 years of hands on experience working in rural areas with development initiatives, including soil conservation, water supply and sanitation, and low-input vegetable production. She has managed a South African non-profit organization and presented several papers on natural resource management, environmental education and tourism in SA and abroad. Nicky has made inputs into policy debates leading to formulation of environmental laws in South Africa. She has produced policy papers, mobilized community groups and trained local stakeholders. She has extensive experience compiling business plans, carrying out feasibility assessments, implementing and managing development projects, facilitating community liaison, and conducting community and authority workshops on policy and project management with a focus on environment. Project management includes community based ecotourism products, Working For Water, school greening and sanitation initiatives, and Implementing Agent for the DEAT Poverty Relief fund. Environmental status assessments, tourism development plans and environmental management plans for various local authorities and private clients have augmented her experience with environmental impact assessment work. Bridget Munyantore (Environmetal Projects Co-ordinator)qualified in Environmental Ethics and Rural Development in Uganda in 2010, and has several years of experience as a volunteer on range of development projects including conservation agriculture and care for vulnerable children. Mafuza Nkomo (field officer) previously worked as a WfW contractor and now assists with alien clearing projects and environmental for water supply and other construction projects. Beatus Mkize (field officer)provides hands on support for alien clearing and rangeland restoration project activities in our project sites. He also does a lot of tour guiding, peer education, first aid assistance as well as permaculture practice as he has an extensive knowledge about rangeland as he is a farmer himself.
